Comments:

Robert E. Dorgan was born in 1922. He served in the 407th Bomber Squadron, 92nd Bomb Group as a Lieutenant during World War II. LT Dorgan was the Bombardier on B-17G #42-40052 which was damaged by flak and crashed near Ruurlo, Holland after the crew baled out on a mission to Berlin on 6 Mar 1944 (MACR 2905). Four of them (including Dorgan) successfully evaded enemy capture to Switzerland. As a precautionary measure, the swiss guards locked all the rooms where US pilots were billeted at night. Dorgan smoked in bed and started a fire in his room. No one heard his cries for help nor unlocked his door and he perished in the flames. He died on July 10, 1944 and was temporarily buried in what was then the American Cemetery in Münsingen, Switzerland. His final resting place is in Ferncliff Cemetery, Springfield, Clark County, Ohio, USA.
