Johannes Andreas “John” Boardsen was born on September 24, 1921 in Tromso, Norway. He was the son of Ingvard Berg Johan Boardsen and Jensine W. Boardsen. The family came to the midwest United States when Johannes was an infant and moved to Clinton, Iowa in 1944. Sergeant Boardsen was inducted October 17, 1942 while he was working as a tool and die maker in Chicago, Ill. He received his training as a gunner and engineer on a B-24 at air force bases in Tuscon, Ariz., and in Utah. He went overseas with a B-24 squadron of the the 15th Air Force on January 1, 1944.

Sergeant Boarden was Killed in Action on July 20, 1944 when he was shot down over Switzerland while on his forty-ninth mission. He was temporarily buried in what was then the American Cemetery in Münsingen, Switzerland. He is now buried in the Springdale Cemetery, Clinton, Clinton County, Iowa, USA.
