Leon E. Case, Jr. was born on December 22, 1921 in Phelps, Wisconsin. The Case family came to Iron Mountain, Michigan when Leon Jr. was only 2 years old. He graduated from Kingsford High School and entered the United States Armed Forces on January 1941, 10 months before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Leon served in the 341st Bomb Squadron, 97th Bomb Group as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. Bombardier of the B-17 #42-3147 "Homesick Angel", he was Killed in Action on November 16, 1943 when their plane was shot down during a bombing raid over Istres, France. The wreck of their B-17 was discovered when the lake was dried up in the 60's. 2LT Case is now buried in the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA in a common grave with SSGT Atkins, 2LT Dustin, TSGT Garrity, and 1LT Packard.
