William Adam was a 23-year-old seaman from Virginia who served aboard the merchant ship Africa. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Adam died on March 15, 1815, with variola (smallpox) recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
