William Adams was a 22-year-old seaman from North Carolina who served aboard the merchant ship Hawk. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Adams died on April 24, 1815, with variola (smallpox) recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
