John Edward Goodale was born on March 2, 1921 in Vassalboro, Kennebec County, Maine. He was the son of Archie H. Goodale and Eleanor B. Goodale. He resided in Kennebec County, Maine prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on September 18, 1942 in Portland, Maine. He was noted as being employed in construction and also as Single, without dependents.

John served as a Private First Class, Medical Department, 377th Fighter Squadron, 362nd Fighter Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. John, who was a Medic in the Air Force, was apparently transferred to work with the Army as a Medic after the D-Day invasion of France. PFC Goodale was killed by shellfire on July 20, 1944 and is now buried in the Methodist Church Cemetery, Vassalboro, Kennebec County, Maine, USA.
