John Baptist Allen was a 40-year-old seaman from New York who served aboard the merchant ship Herald. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Allen died on November 21, 1814, with peripneumonia recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
