James H. Sheets was born on March 17, 1923 in Middletown, Butler County, Ohio. He was the son of Hobert Liewellyn Sheets and husbund of Mary Jane McCullough Sheets. He served in the 379th Fighter Squadron, 362nd Fighter Group as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. During the attach on Dansburg, Germany, 2LT Sheets' P-47 was hit by flak and he was killed in the subsequent crash 10 miles short of base. He is now buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint-Avold, France.
