Daniel Appleton was born on June 28, 1786, in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts. He was a 28-year-old seaman from Ipswich who served aboard the merchant ship Frolic. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Appleton died on January 4, 1815, with variola recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
