John J. Allen was assigned to the 306th Bomber Group during World War II. He was later transferred to detached service with the 1st Scouting Force (384th Fighter Squadron, 364th Fighter Group). A pilot of the P-51D Mustang 44-13686 "Rugged Rebel" code 5E-N, his plane suffered engine problems and crashed at Neuringe, Twist, Germany on February 3, 1945. He successfully bailed out of his plane but was taken as a prisoner and was sent to Stalag Luft 3 Sagan-Silesia Bavaria.
