John Bateman was an 18-year-old seaman from Baltimore who served aboard the merchant ship Chasseur. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Bateman died on November 23, 1814, with peripneumonia recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
