Gustave E. Hoffman was born on September 14, 1917 in Sausalito, California. He resided in Santa Clara County, California prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on March 2, 1942 at Moffet Field, California. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Salesperson and also as Married.

Gustave served as a Captain and Pilot on B-26B #41-31848, 553rd Bomber Squadron, 386th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-26, having been damaged on a bombing mission, crashed into the English Channel.

Cpt Hoffman is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Ardennes American Cemetery, Neupré, Belgium.
