He enlisted in the Army on March 2, 1942 at Moffet Field, California. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Salesperson and also as Married.

Gustave served as a Captain and Pilot on B-26B #41-31848, 553rd Bomber Squadron, 386th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-26, having been damaged on a bombing mission, crashed into the English Channel.

Cpt Hoffman is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Ardennes American Cemetery, Neupré, Belgium.
