William E. Turner was born in 1923, in Tennessee. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on July 9, 1942. His occupation was listed as Actor and he is single without dependents.
William served in the 555th Bomb Squadron, 386th Bomber Group, Medium, as a Staff Sergeant and Engineer of the B-26 #41-31625 YA-R "Hell's Fury" during World War II.
In the afternoon of December 13, 1943, a force of nearly 200 B-26 Marauders was sent to Schiphol airfield. They were escorted by RAF Spitfires. A total of 397 tons of bombs was dropped. Hell's Fury took off from Station 164 in Great Dunmow, England. During the mission, the plane received a direct hit from an 88 mm Flak shell and crashed at Hornweg 187, Aalsmeer, Netherlands. Only the pilot had survived.
SSgt Turner is now buried in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA, in the same grave with SSgt Becker, TSgt Peterson, and SSgt King. He also has a cenotaph located in Nashville National Cemetery, Tennessee.
