Joseph Butts was a 22-year-old seaman from New York who served aboard the merchant ship Fair American. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Butts died on December 2, 1814, with suicide recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
