Simon Chandler was a 19-year-old seaman from Massachusetts who served aboard the merchant ship Essex. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Chandler died on October 25, 1814, with fever recorded as his cause of death.
