William Clerk was a 19-year-old seaman from Newport who served aboard the merchant ship Star. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Clerk died on October 21, 1813, with smallpox recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
