James Heber Brandenburg was born on September 9, 1922, in Owsley County, Kentucky. He was the son of Chester Arthur Brandenburg and Nannie Gabbard Brandenburg.

James served in the 335th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant. On March 21, 1944, aborad his P-51 Mustang #43-6641, he took off from Station 356 airfield in Debden, England, on a fighter sweep mission. At 3:30 PM, his plane was struck by flak while strafing an airdrome near Caen, France. With aircraft on fire, he was seen to climb to 1,000 feet, roll over and bail out over Carpiquet, France. Bailing out at a low altitude, his chute was seen to open at treetop level. He was found dead at the scene by the Germans.

1Lt Brandenburg is now buried in the Berea Cemetery, Berea, Madison County, Kentucky, USA.
