John Lewis Childs was born on September 8, 1922, in Hempstead, Nassau County, New York. A graduate of Sewanhaka High School, he was a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute when he joined the Air Force in February 1943. He received his wings at Marianna, Fla.

John Lewis served in the 334th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant. He was Killed in Action on November 6, 1944, when his aircraft was shot down by an ME-109 just south of Rheine-Salzbergen Airdrome in Germany. He is now buried in the Greenfield Cemetery, Uniondale, Nassau County, New York, USA.
