Chester Parlin Grimm was born on January 13, 1914, in Glasford, Peoria County, Illinois. He was the son of Ralph P. Grimm and Faye E. Jackson Grimm. He was a 1933 graduate of Western Military Academy, Alton, Illinois.

Chester, originally from Farmington, Illinois, began his military flying career as a U.S. volunteer with the Royal Canadian Air Force in the early stages of World War II. He trained at Yorkton, Saskatchewan in Course No. 36 from August 20 to November 7, 1941, and later was transferred to the 335th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group.

On January 22, 1943, 2Lt Grimm's squadron was attacked by German fighters over the English Channel while escorting RAF Bostons, but he was shot down during the engagement. 2Lt Grimm was declared Missing in Action. His name is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom. He also has cenotaphs located in Oak Ridge Cemetery and Greenwood Cemetery, both in Illinois.
