James Coombes was a 21-year-old seaman from Wicasset who served aboard the merchant ship Argus. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Coombes died on March 20, 1814, with diarrheoa recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
