Thomas Cooper was a 34-year-old second mate from Massachusetts who served aboard the merchant ship Union. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Cooper died on November 8, 1814, with rubella recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
