Mark H. Kolter, Jr. was born in 1922 in Ohio. He was married to Elinor Jane Leonard Timmerman.

A graduate of Culver Military academy and a student at the University of Arizona, Lt. Kolter entered service on November 19, 1942, as a reserve officer in the Cavalry and transferred to the Air Forces in February 1943. He served in the 334th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant in World War II. He was piloting the P-51 Mustang #43-7178 'Brenda II' at the time of his death.

On May 30, 1944, he was last seen southwest of Brandenburg, Germany. He was heard to call for a homing over the R/T but not seen again. Presumed downed by flak, his aircraft crashed 1 km west of Poemmelte, Germany.

2Lt Kolter is now buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Lima, Allen County, Ohio, USA.
