Ralph Edward Lewis was born on November 17, 1924, in Christopher, Franklin County, Illinois. He was the son of Lemuel Everett Lewis and Lillian Willis Lewis.

Ralph served in the 335th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. On November 18, 1944, his aircraft was struck by flak and crashed while strafing the airdrome northeast of Günzburg, Germany. 2Lt Lewis was killed in action. He is now buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery, Neupré, Belgium.
