Piloting the P-47C #41-6248, 1Lt Merritt was shot down by enemy fighters on July 30, 1943. He was last seen as his group was beginning an attack on a large formation of German fighters over Holland.
1Lt Merritt was declared Missing in Action. His name is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
