Winslow M. "Mike" Sobanski was born on July 29, 1919, in Poland. He was the foster son of January Pawlica and Mr. Pawlica, former Consul-General for Poland in Ottawa, Canada. He was a graduate in the RCAF and served in the 336th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a Major at the time of his death.

On a sweep mission on June 6, 1944, he was leading a section of four Mustangs strafing a truck convoy near Rouen, France. They were attacked by over fifteen Me-109s and Fw-190s. All four of his section were shot down and killed. His plane was shot down by Fw190 fighter around 8:45 PM.

Major Sobanski is now buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery, Neupré, Belgium.
