Herbert O. VanderVate, Jr. was born on September 27, 1917, in Buffalo, New York. He resided in Erie County, New York, and was a member of the New York National Guard prior to the war. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as a Financial Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.
Herbert served in the 334th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant during World War II. On August 22, 1944, he took off from Station 356 airfield in Debden, England, on a strafing mission to the Strasbourg sector in France. At 08:45h, he was hit by flak and crashed into the Schirmeck direction - 20 km SO Molsheim. He was last seen while strafing a truck convoy southeast of Schirmeck, France.
