Gordon H. "Hud" Whitlow was born on August 11, 1921, in Lander, Wyoming. He attended Colorado State College for three years before he joined the Royal Air Force in August 1941. He transferred to the US Air Forces on September 14, 1942.

Gordon served in the 334th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant. He was killed on May 21, 1943, when his aircraft, P-47C-5-RE 41-6406 QP-H, was shot down by an ME-109 after his squadron was attacked by a large group of enemy aircraft near Ostend, Belgium.

1Lt Whitlow is now buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery, Neupré, Belgium.
