Ward K. Wortman was born on October 6, 1917, in Washington. He was the son of Relief Jackson Wortman and Maud Jacob Wortman.
Ward served in the 335th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. On July 14, 1943, he took off from Sation 356 airfield at Debden, England, on a bomber escort mission. At 07:30h, his plane, P-47D-1-RE #42-7939 WD-Z, was shot down by a fighter and crashed at Bois de Toutencourt (towards La Folle Emprise) - Cne de Toutencourt Contay - 18 km NE Amiens.
2Lt Wortman is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France.
