James T. Byrd, Jr. was born in 1919 in North Carolina. He served in the 334th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant during World War II.
2Lt Byrd was killed on June 8, 1944, while on a local training flight. His aircraft (P-51 #43-6433) caught fire and exploded in midair, crashing near Little Glemham northwest of Blaxhall, England. His current burial place is unknown.
