Charles Young Mead was born on October 20, 1922, in Lewisboro, New York. He was the son of David Irving Mead and Elizabeth Young Mead.

Charles served in the 336th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. He was killed in a flight accident piloting the P-51D-5-NT #44-11202 on November 6, 1944. On a local flight, his chute streamed when he was forced to bail out one mile northeast of Bartlow, England.

2Lt Mead is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom. He also has a cenotaph located in Mead Cemetery, Waccabuc, Westchester County, New York.
