John Mitchellweiss was born on April 21, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois. He served in the 336th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant during World War II.
2Lt Mitchellweiss was killed in a flight accident on February 1, 1943, aboard P-47C-2-RE #41-6200 “00” near Duxford, England. While on a local flight, his aircraft caught fire, and he was forced to bail out. Upon leaving the aircraft, his chute was not strapped on tight enough, and he was jerked out of it by the force of the speed at which he dropped.
