Jap A. Powell was born in 1917 in Indiana. He served in the 336th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant during World War II.

2lt Powell was Killed in Action on February 13, 1943. While on a patrol off the east coast of Britain, his Spitfire developed engine trouble, and he was forced to bail out at a low altitude. Recovered unconscious by ASR, he died in the hospital without regaining consciousness. He is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
