Frank Joseph Smolinsky was born on January 3, 1919, in New York, to Jan Smolinski and Anastazya Karpa.
He joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, served his pilot training in the USA, and was shipped overseas to ETO, operational training at Officer Training Unit, assigned to 121S, transferred to 335th FS, 4th Fighter Group 8th Air Force USAAF.
He was killed in a non-operational flight in Republic P-47C Thunderbolt P47 41-6181. He took off from RAF Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England for RAF Debden in Essex but returned for an attempted crash landing near Sawbridgeworth airfield just outside airfield on approach when the engine caught fire and the aircraft spun into the ground and exploded.
2Lt Smolinsky is now buried in the Long Island National Cemetery, East Farmingdale, Suffolk County, New York, USA. He is commemorated on the memorial at the former RAF Sawbridgeworth Aerodrome in Essex, but his surname is spelled 'Smolenski.'
