Richard L. Tannehill was born in 1919 in Ohio. He served in the 335th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a Captain during World War II.

Cpt Tannehill was killed in a flight accident on May 17, 1945. Piloting the P-51 Mustang #44-72340, his aircraft spun in and crashed during a practice flight. It is believed that the cause was a lack of oxygen. He is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
