Robert L. Kakerbeck was born in 1922 in New York. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Air Force. After completing his training, he was assigned to the 336th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group.

2Lt Kakerbeck was killed in a flight accident on June 4, 1944, piloting a P-51 fighter. His plane crashed while on a local training flight 3 miles east of Castle Camps.

2Lt Kakerbeck is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom. His name is listed on the Anglo-American Memorial in Saffron Walden in England, but his surname is spelled 'Kackerback.'
