Charles D. Hewes was born on 10 March 1921 in Biloxi, Mississippi. He served in the 335th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a Captain and pilot of P-51 Mustang #44-15455 during World War II.

Cpt Hewes died on 18 December 1944. His Mustang was seen to spiral out of formation while climbing through a cloud bank. Crashed in a moor in Tinholt, Germany suffering a fractured spine. Captured and sent to a hospital, he later died in captivity on 13 February 45.

Cpt Hewes is now buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery, Neupré, Belgium.
