Ernest R. Skilton was born on 15 November 1921 in Los Angeles, California. He served in the 336th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant during World War II.

1Lt Skilton was Killed in Action on 16 March 1944. His aircraft (P-51 Mustang #43-6652 ) was shot down during an engagement with over 30 German aircraft. He was not seen to go down. He is now buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint-Avold, France. His name is listed on the Anglo-American Memorial in Saffron Walden, England, but his middle initial there is K.
