John T. Slater, Jr. was born on 25 January 1918 in Newark, New Jersey. He joined the RAFVR, was assigned to the 121 squadron, and later served the 335th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant during World War II.

On 21 September 1942 while on a shipping recco off the Dutch coast, he located and attacked a convoy protected by several flak ships. His aircraft (Spitfire P8339) was struck by flak, and he notified his wingman he was going to bail out. Before he could, his aircraft nosed over and went in from 1,000’. He was Killed in Action.

2Lt Salter is now buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands.
