Edward J. Steppe, Jr. was born on 19 December 1918. He served in the 334th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant during World War II.
On 6 June 1944, he took off from Station 356 airfield in Debden, England, on a sweep mission to northern France. He flew in no.2 position in the Cobweb white section led by Major Sobanski. While escorting his section leader after he struck some wires while strafing, Steppe’s aircraft (P-51 Mustang #43-6957 QP*M) was set upon by a gaggle of Luftwaffe fighters. He was killed in the ensuing battle.
2Lt Steppe is now buried in the Long Island National Cemetery, East Farmingdale, Suffolk County, New York, USA.
