                            Edmund D. Whalen was born in 1921 in New York. He served in the RAF and was later transferred to the 334th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group in World War II.
His aircraft was hit by debris from an exploding Me110 and crashed east of Helmstedt, Germany, on an escort mission to Berlin on 6 Mar 1944 in P-51 43-6630. 1Lt Whales was killed in the incident. He is now buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands. His name is listed on the Anglo-American Memorial in Saffron Walden in England, but his first name is inscribed as Edward.
