James E. Fleming, Jr. entered military service in Pennsylvania. He served in the 434th Fighter Squadron, 479th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant during World War II.
He took off from Wattisham, England, on 10 August 1944 on a sweep mission to the Dijon-Melun area in France. His aircraft (P-38 Lightning #43-28341 L2*W "Scat III") fell off in a dive, out of control, after being hit by heavy flak at about 7,000 feet. It exploded at 1030hrs and burned in the woods at Romery, four miles north-west of Epernay, France.
1Lt Fleming is now buried in the Epinal American Cemetery, Dinozé, France.
