LeRoy "Lear" Lutz was born on 6 March 1920 in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was the son of Andrew Lutz and Mary Katharina Riffel Lutz.

LeRoy served in the 434th Fighter Squadron, 479th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant and pilot of the P-38 #4328714 during World War II. On 22 June 1944, Pilot 2nd.Lt. LeRoy Lutz took the P-38 "Lucky Lady" out on Mission 78. As Lutz started his strafing run against a German train near Epernay, France, his right engine was hit with ground fire. He stayed with the damaged aircraft and steered it away from the French village of Mardeuil, costing his life. He is now buried in the Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, USA.
