James E. Spillane, Jr. was born in 1919 in Pennsylvania. He was raised in Haddon Township, Camden County, New Jersey, the son of James E., Sr., and Ida Spillane. He was a 1938 graduate of Collingswood High School.

Second Lieutenant Spillane was sent to England in April of 1944. He flew combat missions from England over Germany, France, and the Low Countries. His plane was involved in an accident while taxiing at Wattisham in England on 26 May 1944. He was killed in action while flying an escort mission aboard P-38J Lightning #43-28655, protecting the bomber formations, over France, on 9 June 1944.

2Lt Spillane is now buried in the New Saint Mary's Cemetery, Bellmawr, Camden County, New Jersey, USA.
