Hilton Oren Thompson entered military service in Louisiana. He was the son of Jesse and Stella Thompson.

Hilton served in the 434th Fighter Squadron, 479th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant during World War II. On 19 July 1945, he was the Pilot of P-51 tail 44-15380 when it went down over the English Channel on a practice dive-bombing mission. He was credited as being the last pilot from the 8th Air Force to down a German plane in World War II. His remains were never recovered.

1Lt Thompson is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
