William Erwin was a 33-year-old from Cumberland who served in a hospital role aboard the merchant ship Star. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Erwin died on March 14, 1815, with mania recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
