O. D. Hamby entered military service in Tennessee. He served in the 66th Regiment, 2nd Armored Division as a Staff Sergeant during World War II. He died on September 18, 1944, and is now buried in the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Hombourg, Belgium. SSgt Hamby was one of the 65 soldiers killed in battle during the liberation of the Limburg region of the Netherlands and Belgium.
