John Francis was a 38-year-old seaman from Portsmouth who served aboard the merchant ship Royal William. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Francis died on April 15, 1815, with “died suddenly” recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
