John Kopie, Jr. was born on August 8, 1913, in McAdoo, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Mary Karney Kopie and John Kopie.

John served in Company A, 702nd Tank Destroyer Battalion, as a Sergeant during World War II. He died on September 19, 1944, at the age of 31, and is now buried in the Saint Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, McAdoo, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, USA. Sgt Kopie was one of the 65 soldiers killed in battle during the liberation of the Limburg region of the Netherlands and Belgium.
