Joseph Fulford was a 22-year-old seaman from North Carolina who served aboard the merchant ship Snapdragon. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Fulford died on January 27, 1815, with variola recorded as his cause of death.
