He was Killed in Action on September 17, 1944, at the age of 35, and is now buried in the Little White Country Church Cemetery, Rutherfordton, Rutherford County, North Carolina, USA. PFC Settles was one of the 65 soldiers killed in battle during the liberation of the Limburg region of the Netherlands and Belgium. His headstone was mistakenly inscribed with the wrong unit.
